Jeannie Baker Art Inspiration

Jeannie baker is a famous Australian author and illustrator. She has written many books about family and the environment. The year foundation to year 2 students have been reading some of her stories in the artroom and using her illustrations as inspiration for their own works of art.

The year foundation students are learning about family. Jeannie baker books ‘Grandfather and Grandmother’ tell the story of Jeannie’s family and her memories of times spend with these two special people in her life.

The year 1/2 students are focusing on the environment so have been reading a range of her books such as ‘The story of Rosie Dock’, ‘Where the Forest meets the Sea’ and ‘Window.

Jeannie Baker using collage to illustrate her books and collects items from nature to make these pictures. Have a look on her website and at the short videos she has up. They are fascinating. Students are focusing on texture and creating collages to show either a family portrait or an environmental scene. Stay tuned.

Our Whole School concert took place a few weeks ago at the Clocktower Centre in Moonee Ponds.

Book Week 2016

This year for Book Week each teacher was asked to choose a book they wanted to read to their class and to complete an art activity to accompany the book. I chose the Winning book ‘Mr Huff’ by Anna Walker.

I loved reading this book over and over and talking to the students about the meanings behind the story and the pictures. Such a powerful message and suitable for all ages. I think every family should have a copy of this book at home.

The art activity was a huge success. The students all love loved making their own special Mr Huff to share secrets and worries with. Their own special worry doll. We all need one of these! screen-shot-2016-10-22-at-4-17-01-pm screen-shot-2016-10-22-at-4-16-53-pm screen-shot-2016-10-22-at-4-16-45-pm

Another art activity that turned out striking was the year 5/6 scrapper board based on the book ‘One Step At a Time’. These works of art are on display in the library. img_5558 img_5559 img_5560

Foundation Primary Colours and Line Unit

The Foundation students have focused on the Art Elements of Colour and Line this term. They have learnt about mixing the primary colours to make the secondary colours and about using lines to make geometric shapes.

Students look at works by famous artist Jean Mondrian. They then drew a design in their visual diaries and coloured this in using crayons to ensure the pattern and design where correct. Students then painted black lines on to white paper to create geometric shapes such as squares and rectangles. These where then filled in using yellow, red and blue paint. They look striking and I think it would be hard to tell one of our students works from an original! screen-shot-2016-09-22-at-3-30-25-pm screen-shot-2016-09-22-at-3-30-42-pm screen-shot-2016-09-22-at-3-30-52-pm screen-shot-2016-09-22-at-3-31-03-pmimg_5095 img_5096 img_5097 img_5098 img_5099 img_5100 img_5101 img_5102

Here are some photos of students working on props in the art room. Look out for these on the night of the concert.

A big thank you to the Foundation students who decorated with such detail and thought the tiles for the magic carpet and the year 3/4 Students who cut them out and stuck them down to create the magic carpet. img_5372How fantastic do these look. Im actually surprised that you can tell who so many of the characters are in these portraits. Students thought about colour mixing and shading to create these lovely portraits of people who inspire them . They are on display around the school for you to check out.

Foundation Dance Unit

The Foundation students have begun a new unit of work this term in PA.

They will be working on the unit of Dance and Music. The music unit will be specifically focusing on singing.

They have been having lots of fun taking part in some dance activities using props such as Scarves.

I love these photos I snapped of some of the perps dancing with the scarves. They are moving so fast the photos are almost blurry.

Year 3/4 Term 2- Pattern

Pattern is one of the Principle of Art.

Principles are a way artist can organise the elements of art.

Here is a list of the art elements and principles:

Elements:

Line

Form

Shape

Colour

Space

Value

Texture

Principles:

Harmony

Balance

Proportion

Emphasis

Variety

Movement

Rhythm

This term we will be focusing on the principle of pattern. In class this week we have discussed the art elements that we can use to make patterns. Have a think about these.

We made up a definition of a pattern: A pattern is something that is repeated.

Have a look at these paintings and see if you can spot any patterns. Comment on which one you like the best and why.
