Year 1/2 have been working hard to create their Jeannie Baker collage. They are looking fantastic and beginning to show an understanding of an ecosystem and the animals and plants that live in specific environments.
The foundation students have been working on creating a photomontage inspired by artist Hannah Hoch.
The students cut apart a photograph of their own face and added in other people facial features creating a new face. They turned out very funny. Not many looked like the students anymore. Have a look at these fabulous photos.
Jeannie baker is a famous Australian author and illustrator. She has written many books about family and the environment. The year foundation to year 2 students have been reading some of her stories in the artroom and using her illustrations as inspiration for their own works of art.
The year foundation students are learning about family. Jeannie baker books ‘Grandfather and Grandmother’ tell the story of Jeannie’s family and her memories of times spend with these two special people in her life.
The year 1/2 students are focusing on the environment so have been reading a range of her books such as ‘The story of Rosie Dock’, ‘Where the Forest meets the Sea’ and ‘Window.
Jeannie Baker using collage to illustrate her books and collects items from nature to make these pictures. Have a look on her website and at the short videos she has up. They are fascinating. Students are focusing on texture and creating collages to show either a family portrait or an environmental scene. Stay tuned.

This year for Book Week each teacher was asked to choose a book they wanted to read to their class and to complete an art activity to accompany the book. I chose the Winning book ‘Mr Huff’ by Anna Walker.
I loved reading this book over and over and talking to the students about the meanings behind the story and the pictures. Such a powerful message and suitable for all ages. I think every family should have a copy of this book at home.
When their parents go missing on a routine mission, nine children are left to survive on an often dangerous and unforgiving world. Thirteen year old Freddie, together with her brother Pierre, must ensure the safety and survival of the younger children, whilst also trying to solve the mysterious disappearance of the adults. Mars holds a secret so devastating, it will shake the foundations of the Red Planet and change the way humanity views the universe.

The Foundation students have focused on the Art Elements of Colour and Line this term. They have learnt about mixing the primary colours to make the secondary colours and about using lines to make geometric shapes.
Students look at works by famous artist Jean Mondrian. They then drew a design in their visual diaries and coloured this in using crayons to ensure the pattern and design where correct. Students then painted black lines on to white paper to create geometric shapes such as squares and rectangles. These where then filled in using yellow, red and blue paint. They look striking and I think it would be hard to tell one of our students works from an original!
The whole school concert is only weeks away. Thursday the 13th of October is the big day so make sure you have booked your tickets.
Students have been busy practising and making, designing and preparing for the big day.

A big thank you to the Foundation students who decorated with such detail and thought the tiles for the magic carpet and the year 3/4 Students who cut them out and stuck them down to create the magic carpet. It looks lovely and the Foundation students where so proud!
In the last week of Term 3 the year 5/6 students had a fun lesson based on costume design. We discussed the role costumes play in a performing arts show/ concert or entertainment piece. Students then had to pick a time from history and discuss and share what they knew about the fashion of the time.
After a quick chat and share with the class students got to work on designing and creating their costumes. The only catch was the material provided. Toilet paper. One roll per costume and no other tools. A fashion show was held at the end of each session to view the costumes and hear from the students about what they had created. These photos say it all……
The year 1/2 students have been busy working on their clay sculptures in the art room. The process has been a new experience for many students experimenting with using clay as a medium as well as using clay tools. Students have enjoyed getting dirty and being messy with the sticky clay. Each 1/2 class has focused on sculpting a different structure based on their concert piece.
1/2A are working on Totem Poles.
1/2B are working on sculpting people or animals with umbrella’s.
1/2C are working on Mermaids.
1/2D are working on Snowmen.
1/2E are working on china cups and
1/2F are working on crocodiles.
