Year 3/4 Patchwork Pastel Self Portraits

An important skill that we must learn in art is Drawing. In visual arts we have had a focus on drawing each week in the year’s 3-6.

Each class begins with a five minute ‘Get Your Art Brain Ready Drawing Activity’. This is a quick drawing or sketch of an item in the students visual diaries. The drawing activity is to encourage students to focus on the art activity, calm them down on entering the art room and get their brain working in an artsy way. Students are encouraged to draw what they see, not what they know is there or what they think it there. they are encouraged to think of size, texture and angle. Some classes students are asked to not touch the item so that they have to draw it from the most challenging angle instead of moving the item so it is in an easy to draw position.

Using the visual diaries is a fantastic way to see the improvements and challenges that students have overcome and how they have pushed the boundaries when drawing a range of items.

The year 3/4 Students have focused on self portraits and using pastels to add texture to their features.

Each week we focused our drawing skills on to a feature or the face.

Week 1 was focused on positioning of the features, face shapes and how we can cut the face up to see the maths in a portrait.

The following weeks consisted on focus lessons on drawing eyes, noses, ears, mouths and hair.

The final patchwork faces are striking, fun and very well proportioned.

The year 3/4 students should be very happy with they work!

Well done.
